Power line communication technology (Power Line Communication) referred to as PLC technology. The basic principle is the use of the existing power grid, high-speed transmission of data, voice, image and other multimedia information, which contains information on the signal loading power line transmission, receiving information to extract the signal from the modem power line by way of coupling, and transmitted to the computer and communications equipment, in order to transmit information.

According to the development and application of PLC communication technology, PLC technology can be used in high voltage transmission network (35kV), medium voltage power transmission network (10kV-35kV) and low voltage power distribution network (10kV) and other fields, or more detailed application areas for the family in low voltage distribution network. In different application areas, PLC has different technical standards, specifications and design requirements.

The power line communication standard are mainly three, namely powerpacket (HomePlug Association, HPA), the representative manufacturers is Intellon; the uPA (Universal Powerline, Association, UPA) representative is DS2 and consumer electronics manufacturers, Power Line Communications Alliance (CE- Powerline Communication Alliance, CEPCA). The main representative is Panasonic manufacturers. These three standard products have been widely used in Europe, North America and Asia, Japan, Korea and other developed countries.

The development of power line communication technology, has experienced a long period of time, through constant practice of power line communication status and the communication encoding algorithm and the optimization of modulation, the data transmission rate increasing, experienced by 14Mbps, 85Mbps, 200Mbps, and the subsequent higher 700Mbps and 1Gbps. The anti-interference ability is enhanced and the stability is improved greatly. In the process of developing the HomePlug 1 standard, the HomePlug transmission line alliance conducted extensive field tests. More than and 500 families in the United States and Canada tested the new standards. The results show that the new standard can be suitable for 98% of household electrical sockets. With more than 98% coverage, consumers should be satisfied with the products based on this standard. The new standard to dispel people‘s concerns about the feasibility of power transmission network.
